This new crank shaft came from the race winning Motogp bikes.The idea behind this design is change where the crank pins are located at on the crank. Normally they are 180 degrees apart. Two pistons up and two pistons down. With the cross plane crank the crank pins are 90 degrees apart. This is done to even out the energy flow. This way the energy is pulsed every 90 degrees. Which makes for a smoother more linear power delivery. Which makes the new 2013 R1 faster than anyone else.
